Simple NFSv4 configuration for Debian and Ubuntu

NFSv4 offers a lot of advantages (speed, security, ...) to NFSv3, but clear
documentation online on how to set it all up is a bit hard to find. Especially
if you're not interested in specific features like kerberos, and just want to
upgrade your simple local-network NFSv3 setup to NFSv4. Here's an example of
how I've installed it.

Are you using one of those wonderful little Soekris
machines? Did you put in a harddrive? Are you now having temperature issues?
But you don't want to put in a fan?

Today I've installed the recently released Linux Mint

The Distro I'd like to use

I'm a distrohopper, and have been for a long time. There have been
days in which I've installed at least five different distributions
to try. Always to return to the moment's least frustrating Linux
distribution. Beranger, I fully
understand the often bitter tone of your posts.

vboxcontrol 2008051100

A while
ago
i wrote a script for starting up
VirtualBox machines at system boot of the
host. This script was called VirtualBoxMachines. I received some
comments about it, and today I took the time to clean up the script,
rename it to vboxcontrol, and put it with a proper README and
ChangeLog file in a tarball.

Mandriva 2008 Spring One Gnome preliminary look

A while ago I took a look at Mandriva 2008 Spring RC1 inside VirtualBox. Today, the 2008 Spring final release was announced. I decided to install it on my main laptop (Acer 5920). Here#s a few quick notes. Perhaps a full review will follow later. This time I downloaded the One GNOME i586 version.

Ulteo Application System 8.00 beta1 review

Gael Duval is the founder of the popular Mandriva (previously called Mandrake) distribution. He no longer works there, and now he#s been building a new distribution called Ulteo. It is to be a system combined of a Desktop operating system and tightly integrated network services. Combined together, they should provide real-time desktop sharing/collaboration, and automatic file synchronization/backups stored at Ulteo. At least, that#s what I understand from the Ulteo scheme. To get an idea of what Ulteo AS currently provides, the flash movie on this page should clear things up a bit.

Start VirtualBox virtual machines on boot

NOTE: check the vboxcontrol section for up to date information. This article is a bit stale.

Today, uptime of Far Fewer Toes suffered. That#s because we#ve bought a new computer to host the site on. Previously, we were hosting on an old Pentium III 600, which badly needed a replacement. We also needed to free up another box, in order to use it for real reviews and tests (as opposed to in VirtualBox).

we've come since. This is a look back at what happened in the
